About Me

Michael Shapiro

Hi y'all. I'm Michael Shapiro, a sports reporter covering all things Houston sports for Chron.com.

I'm a Denver native and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, a written and video journalist whose passion for sports reporting took me from a Mile High to the Lone Star State to the Big Apple and back to the Lone Star State once again. I've covered the World Series, NBA and NFL playoff games and collegiate postseason contests, where I thrive as an on-deadline journalist who asks incisive questions and delivers the stories behind the scenes on a given season's most important contests.

I've also developed a passion for reporting on the business, politics and social constructs of sports, exploring the athletes, coaches and powerful forces who shape the world we know today. I've reported on Azeez Al-Shaair's support for those suffering in Gaza and Bernie Sanders' work to save minor-league baseball, and I've developed close relationships with major Houston power brokers in Rockets owners Tilman and Patrick Fertitta and Texans president Mike Tomon, among others.

From various roles at the Daily Texan and Sports Illustrated to my current job at Chron, I'm driven by a simple code: if there's a story worth chasing, I'll be on the scene, delivering readers and viewers the information they deserve to know.
